New agricultural thrust

KEY participants of the recent government-private sector conference “Agriculture and Fisheries 2025 (AF 2025): Common Vision, Shared Journey” are working hard to meet commitments fleshed out during the landmark meeting.

The new agricultural thrust initiated at this conference had two noteworthy components. The first was the joint undertaking of the executive, legislative and private sector to formulate a “paradigm shift” in agricultural development. This included not just a short-term view but also a vision for 2025. The second was the great importance given to the private sector to attain this vision.

The six task forces are: Rice and Cereals, coordinated by Emil Javier, former science and technology minister and UPLB chancellor; Fisheries by Arsenio Tanchuling, thrice elected chair of the Southeast Asian Fisheries for Justice; Livestock and Yellow Corn by Gregorio San Diego, chair of the United Broiler Raisers Association; Fruits and Vegetables by Robert Amores, Mango Growers Association chair; Commercial Crops (including coconut and sugar) by Rolando Dy, agribusiness head of the University of Asia and the Pacific; and Cross-Cutting Issues (including LGU agricultural leadership, credit and women empowerment) by Senen Bacani, former agriculture secretary, with former Economic Planning Secretary Cielito Habito as a key member.
