Ortigas Center denizens are in for a Christmas treat.

The University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) partnered with the Ortigas Center Association Inc. (OCAI) and Barangay San Antonio to launch the “Belen” competition Belenistas de Ortigas open to all buildings and institutions in Ortigas Center.

The contest with the theme “To seek for a King was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went,” was launched last Thursday at the UA&P campus amid musical presentations. The day also coincided with the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary, creating an early Christmas mood.

According to the contest’s website, its bid to create a “Belen town” out of the bustling Pasig-Mandaluyong commercial district will not only provide new tourist sites in Ortigas, but also “[promote] Christian values amongst the members of the community.”

It adds that the competition “will be a showcase of different Belens within the Ortigas Center…[highlighting] Filipino creativity and ingenuity with concern for environmental preservation.”

The Belenistas this year is UA&P’s first joint initiative with OCAI and the local barangay to celebrate the yuletide season.

Criteria for judging include originality, creativity, clarity of the theme, craftsmanship, and visual impact, while reflecting one of the “main characteristics of Christ’s birth,” which is stark simplicity, the website says.
