Basic Economics students last semester chose to empower mothers as a class project under UA&P economists Mr. Bienvenido Nito and Mr. Jonathan Alforte.

The participants, residing in the Pasig and Mandaluyong area, run micro-businesses such as flower delivery services, bakery and eateries chosen among clients of micro-finance firm ASA Philippines Foundation.

Seminar coordinator Laika Pantaleon (II, College of Arts and Sciences) noted that the Basic Economics seminar not only fulfilled its goal of teaching mothers, but made the students connect with them as well.

Madaldal ang mothers. The trick with them is you have to have a lot of energy. The approach in the seminar should be to share our own experiences so that they’ll also share [theirs] with us,” Pantaleon said.

Mr. Nito, who gave his students free rein on the seminar’s logistics, also asked them to document the series as the output product for his course. He said that the seminar would be “a win-win situation” for both mothers and students since both parties learn something from each other.

“The intention is really to help the students have a venue for explaining or discussing the concepts acquired in class. [Students] will be able to increase the level of their understanding of the subject and [reach out] to the mothers,” Mr. Nito said in an interview.

Mr. Nito, who has asked his students for three years now to conduct the event, also believes that when one has only understood economics lessons when he can effectively teach others about it.

The student-run seminar traces began in the School of Economics in partnership with the microfinancier ASA Philippines Founation. Mr. Nito said that since he pursued the idea of a training course for mothers, ASA has requested that it be held even outside Metro Manila to make its benefits far-reaching.

According to their website, ASA currently has 312 branches nationwide catering to a total of over 400,00 clients. Its head office is in Ortigas Center, Pasig City, where the University is also located.
