Broadcaster Mike Enriquez speaks at the Li Seng Giap Auditorium for "I Write For Change" seminar.

Prominent broadcasters and writers addressed an overcrowded Li Seng Giap Auditorium — UA&P’s largest hall — at a campus journalism seminar, July 7.

Organized by the student group CATALYST, the event was dubbed “I Write for Change,” highlighting the newspaper’s role in social change. More than 640 students and teachers from Metro Manila high schools attended the seminar.

GMA Network’s Mike Enriquez, one of the most respected TV broadcasters today, led the event’s powerhouse roster of speakers. He talked about the need for writers to become responsible by establishing credibility and adhering to a set of values.

Meanwhile, economist-columnist Dr. Bernardo Villegas challenged the young audience to make a positive impact on society. He is a co-founder of UA&P and a renowned author of various books.

The conference’s other speakers included Edwin Lopez, regional manager of EWTN Catholic global network, who discussed the “transformative” power of media. Atty. Jeremy Gatdula, a faculty member of the University and columnist in various national dailies, also talked about the need to change media for the better. CATALYST moderator Emmanuel Rentoy, who himself has received nine Catholic Mass Media Awards trophies, challenged the audience to become real catalysts in society.

As the auditorium’s capacity was only 350, almost 300 more chairs were added to accommodate the overflow crowd.

The event ended with the giving out of the first-ever CATALYST Award for Responsible Journalism to San Isidro Catholic School for their school paper, The Isidorian.  The winner was chosen from more than 30 entries that were submitted for the competition. The speakers chose one winner from the five best entries screened by the organizers.
