Foreign and local academicians will convene at the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) to discuss relations between Asia and Latin America on October 9-11.

The 5th International Conference of the Latin American Studies Council of Asia and Oceania (CELAO) will be co-organized by the Philippine Academic Consortium for Latin American Studies (PACLAS) with the theme, “Strengthening Exchanges across the Pacific.”

About 60 scholars from Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Spain, and the US, as well as representatives from local private and public sectors, will attend the event.

According to CELAO, the conference aims to “explore the multiple dimensions of interaction in time and space, particularly in what has evolved into the Asia-Pacific region.”

It will highlight the “rich potential and actual cooperation among the countries of Asia and Latin America.”

Sen. Edgardo Angara will lead the dinner reception on October 9.

PACLAS is currently chaired by UA&P College of Arts and Sciences Vice Dean of Academic Affairs Marya Svetlana Camacho.

The consortium aims to promote Latin American studies in the Philippines and to contribute to the “revitalization of Philippine relations with Latin America…[counting] on shared heritage.”

Member institutions of PACLAS are UA&P, the Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, University of the East, University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, Department of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Service Institute, and the Philippine Institute for Development Studies.
