On December 12, 2016, the Prelate of Opus Dei and the Honorary Grand Chancellor of the University of Asia and the Pacific, His Excellency Most Reverend Javier Echevarría, passed away in Rome due to respiratory insufficiency brought about by a pulmonary illness.

We have been blessed with Bishop Echevarría’s presence in the University on three separate occasions. The first was on January 26, 1987, when he accompanied Blessed Alvaro del Portillo, then Prelate of Opus Dei, to a gathering with some bishops and diocesan priests.

As Prelate of Opus Dei, he was present at the University on August 12, 1998, at some gatherings with students and faithful of the Prelature of Opus Dei. His last visit occurred on July 31, 2008, when he preached a meditation and celebrated Mass at the Sancta Maria Stella Orientis Oratory.

Bishop Echevarría had great love for the University and was especially concerned about the attention being given to the Management Committee and the Operations Committees, the professors, the administrative staff, and the students. On the two meetings I had with him in Rome, he was interested in what was going on in the University.

Monsignor Fernando Ocariz, Auxiliary Vicar of Opus Dei, highlighted “his capacity to love people. Specifically, to be very close to the people he was with, including unexpected encounters.” He showed this when he would stop to talk to people who greeted him on those occasions he was in the UA&P campus.

Let us seek his intercession for all the work we do in the University. Likewise, I invite everyone to offer suffrages for the repose of his soul. Monsignor Ocariz offered this advice: “The best suffrage, besides the Mass (which is the key suffrage) and prayer, is our work and daily life offered in suffrage. It’s what he will hope for in Heaven, so that we help him to have an even higher place.”
