CHED grants Autonomous Status to UA&P

Last May 18, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) officially granted Autonomous Status to UA&P during the Commission’s Awarding Ceremony for Higher Education Institutions and Quality Assurance Partners held at the CHED Auditorium in Diliman. The ceremony was among the activities held in celebration of Higher Education Week and CHED’s 23rd anniversary.

Having been granted Autonomous Status until May of 2019, UA&P shall enjoy, among others, the following benefits:

  • Exemption from the issuance of Special Order for  graduates
  • Exemption from regular monitoring and evaluation by CHED
  • Privilege to determine and prescribe curricular programs to achieve global competence
  • Privilege to offer new courses/programs in the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, in areas of expertise, without securing permit/authority from CHED
  • Privilege to offer extension classes to expand access to higher education
  • At the instance of CHED, the institutions may be authorized to offer programs via the alternative mode such as distance education, ETEEAP, or transnational education
  • Privilege to increase tuition fees without securing a permit from CHED provided, however, that the existing CHED Policies, Standards and Guidelines on increases in tuition and other school fees are fully complied with, especially those pertaining to the consultation process and requirements
  • Authority to grant honorary degrees to deserving individuals in line with the provisions of the existing CHED issuance on conferment of honorary degrees

The grant was approved based on CHED’s review of documents submitted by the University and recommendations of the Technical Working Group on Higher Education Institutions Classification. Other benefits and responsibilities of autonomous higher education institutions may be viewed here.
