Aguinaldo: 1898

Synopsis:

This play depicts the Filipino revolutionaries' struggle to end Spanish rule and establish an independent state. After returning from exile in May 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo resumes the revolution, defeats the Spanish forces, and proclaims Philippine Independence on June 12.

However, tensions escalate as the United States military authorities refuse to recognize Philippine sovereignty. Despite Aguinaldo's attempts to secure a written alliance, thousands of American troops arrive, and Spain eventually surrenders to the United States rather than to the Filipinos. While Aguinaldo convenes the Malolos Congress and gains internal support from the provinces, the United States "buys" the Philippines from Spain and demands that Filipino forces withdraw from Manila.

Efforts at peace ultimately collapse after General Otis proclaims American military rule over the archipelago. Following a fatal skirmish between American sentries and Filipino soldiers, the Philippine-American War begins.
