(The Filipinization Movement in Ateneo de Manila University)

A documentary play.

Synopsis:

This play documents the student and faculty initiative to "decolonize" Ateneo education. It presents the statements of students and faculty members on how to make Ateneo education more relevant to the Philippine experience. The movement began in the 1969–70 school year, when students advocated for the appointment of a Filipino dean of the college to properly uphold academic freedom and advance the Filipinization of the college. The advocates for Filipinization questioned academic appointments, demanded that Filipino be used as a medium of instruction, and called for the curriculum and textbooks to be reviewed. By the end of the play, the advocates for Filipinization experience a sense of futility in the face of the apathy of many members of the university community.
