At Last, Upper Middle Income

The Philippines' reclassification as an upper-middle-income economy marks an important milestone, reflecting stronger national income growth supported in part by overseas remittances. Yet this achievement also raises a critical challenge—avoiding the middle-income trap by improving productivity, education, infrastructure, innovation, investment, and governance. This issue of Staff Memos discusses what the country must do to sustain momentum toward high-income status and inclusive development.
