The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) conducted a brown bag session titled “Experiences from the International Philippine Political Science Association Conference” on May 21 at the ALB Faculty Lounge. The session featured CAS philosophy instructor Dr. Maria Celine Anastasia Socrates, who presented her paper, “Hannah Arendt’s banality of evil in systemic corruption: The Discaya interviews.”

The presentation explored how corruption can become normalized within institutions and bureaucratic structures. Drawing from the political philosophy of Hannah Arendt—a German-American thinker best known for her concept of the “banality of evil,” which examines how ordinary individuals can become complicit in harmful systems—the presentation analyzed the dynamics of systemic corruption in the Philippines.

Central to the brown bag session were the Discaya interviews, which relate to the controversial flood control scandal involving the Discaya couple—Pacifico “Curlee” II and Cezarah “Sarah” Discaya—public works contractors linked to government flood mitigation projects that have drawn public scrutiny over alleged irregularities and misuse of public funds.
