The Department of Labor and Employment proclaimed OFWs as the Philippines' "modern day heroes." In spite of that, the OFWs could simultaneously be the Philippines' bulwark and Achilles Heel. Without denying the negative impact of peso appreciation on OFW families, the focus of this article is on the social costs of Filipinos having to work abroad as OFWs.
