UA&P faculty help shape national public opinion research

Two UA&P professors are lending their expertise to a national effort to better understand how Filipinos think about politics and society.

Dr. Bernardo M. Villegas, University Professor Emeritus and co-founder of UA&P, and Dr. Nicomedes Alviar, former dean of UA&P’s School of Politics and Governance and current Program Director for Public Governance and Leadership, serve on the Scientific Committee of WR Numero Research, an independent public opinion research firm behind the Philippine Public Opinion Monitor (PPOM).

The committee brings together scholars and experts to provide independent guidance on survey design, methodology, data analysis, and the interpretation of findings. For the second quarter PPOM, Dr. Villegas and Dr. Alviar joined Dr. Santino Regilme, Chair of the International Relations Programme at Leiden University in the Netherlands, in reviewing survey findings and providing analytical guidance to help ensure that the results were rigorous, balanced, and relevant to current public policy and political discourse.

Conducted quarterly through face-to-face interviews with 1,500 Filipino adults nationwide, the PPOM tracks changing political attitudes, behaviors, and preferences across the country.

Their participation highlights the role of UA&P faculty expertise in strengthening research that contributes to a deeper understanding of Philippine society and public opinion.
